• Consider the extreme temperature swings in space: the outer shell of the International Space Station experiences temperature differentials of up to approximately 333°C. Its sun-facing side can reach around 149°C, while the shaded side plummets to –184°C. And when a spacecraft re-enters Earth's atmosphere, the exterior surfaces—subject to intense aerodynamic friction—can exceed 1,000°C. For such missions, we often rely on high-performance seals capable of withstanding these unforgiving conditions.

• But extreme heat isn't unique to aerospace—it's also a daily reality in firefighting . When firefighters engage in close-quarters suppression and rescue operations, their equipment can be exposed to operating temperatures exceeding 200°C.   Standard rubber seals, however, are ill-suited for such environments. As temperatures rise, the molecular chains of conventional rubber begin to break down on a massive scale—a process known as thermal degradation. This is accompanied by softening, stickiness, and the release of acrid smoke. Eventually, the material hardens, chars, and may even ignite, leading to seal failure and, consequently, equipment leakage.
